Images Through Her Eyes

Phalecia Young’s inspiration for art started when she was enrolled in middle school art classes. Twenty years later she continues to create images as she sees them through her eyes.

What or who inspired you to become an artist?

“My art teacher in middle school inspired me to create more and I had a love for art.”

Describe to me your process when creating a scene.

“I often take photographs with my phone of people, places or things I would like to paint. I get in my creative place and begin to outline the image on canvas, then paint. I love working with bright colors.”

What materials do you use?

“I prefer to work with acrylic on canvas. I tried using oil, but the drying process took longer. I have a paint blanket that I spread on the floor and sit on while painting. I use an assortment of brushes and a 5”x 5” palette for my paint.”

How long does it take for you to complete a painting?

“I start painting after midnight and usually finish when the sun comes up. I once did a painting of Buddha and used a mix of colors in the background. I kept adding more colors and ended up with six layers of paint. The final product took a year to complete.”

How do you get your ideas for your art?

“I go to different galleries for ideas. Sometimes I do portraits of people that have interesting features. Every once and a while I become frustrated with a piece and decide to throw it away, then my sons will come along and offer advice.”

Are there others in your family who create art?

“Both of my sons are now drawing animated art.”

What do you find most rewarding about your craft?

“When the painting turns out better than I originally envisioned.”

Phalecia’s art is available for purchase in the BBTCAC gallery and on our website, http://blackbelttreasures.com.
