Wilcox County resident Sarah Harris creates her art one stitch at a time. She sews quilts not only for warmth, but creates designs that are a piece of art.

How did you get started sewing quilts?

“I watched my mother and grandmother sew quilts and decided one day I wanted to learn. I picked up a needle and thread and started stitching blocks together.”

How long have you been creating your quilts?

“Since I was 10-years-old, so 50 years.”

Did you get any special training from anyone?

“My mother and grandmother taught me the basics and how to do designs.”

What materials do you use when creating a quilt?

“Cotton, woven cloth, thread and a needle, a tape measure, pins, wadding, a sewing machine and a steam iron for pressing.”

Where do you get your fabric?

“Old clothing, such as shirts, skirts, sweaters and pants.”

Where do you create your art?

“I sit in a chair at my kitchen window. I gather my materials and think about what I want to sew, then my imagination flows.”

How long does it take for you to complete a quilt?

“If uninterrupted, I can complete one in a week to a week and a half.”

Do you have any other art interests?

“I did sew clothing, but I am not that good at it anymore.”
