The Glass Fritter

Linda Englert is a glass artist from Clarke County.

“I work primarily in warm or fused glass art using paints or glass chips known as frit. I do business as ‘The Glass Fritter' since fritter means to squander time and energy with frit (glass divided in small pieces ranging in size from powdery sand to pebbles) to produce whimsical florals, landscapes, abstracts, ornaments and suncatchers.”

How did you get started making glass art?

“I learned from John Hogarth. Later, I branched out into fused glass. I took classes for five years because I enjoyed the process so much.”

Which do you prefer to work with the most?

“Fused glass because it is cleaner to work with when creating.”

How long have you been creating your art?

“Almost 5 years.”

What type of material do you use?

“Fusible glass sheets, frits, powder, glass line paints, hi temp wire and gems.”

Where do you find your materials?

"I order from glass distributors across the United States.”

How long does it take you to complete an item from start to finish?

“All pieces are kiln fired a minimum of eight hours and may require multiple firings and layering of glass. An item takes between 12-24 hours.”

How do you get your ideas when creating a piece?

“Nature primarily and I also visit museums and look on the internet for my ideas.”

Do you have a special area for creating your art and what is the process from start to finish?

“The basement is my creative area. My husband built a space for me there. When making an item, I start first by cutting and creating the scene, then fire and finish.”

Linda Englert’s art can be purchased at 905 Gallery in Selma, Melt and More Artisans in Fairhope and BBTCAC or http://blackbelttreasres.com.
