Candle Making
Kim
Lyon was looking for a creative outlet that would enable her to stay at home
with her young children and still earn a small income. After observing a
friend’s success in the candle making industry, Kim tried it herself. What
began as a part-time hobby has quickly become a possible full-time industry.
Much of Kim’s training is from information she has gleamed from internet
websites and of course, trial and error.
In
her home studio, Kim uses purchased materials such as wax, scented oils, cotton
wicks with zinc ends, dyes, and glass containers to create her candles. Because
she likes texture, Kim makes her candles first by melting and shaping small
blocks of colored wax and then pouring over these blocks a melted wax of a
different hue. Her color choices are influenced by trends in interior
decorating. But her scents are chosen by her personal preferences. Kim has
expanded her business to include custom orders and fundraising projects.
Kim’s candles are also available at Mark’s Mart, and Valley Grand
Florist in, Selma, Carriage House Interiors, Montgomery, and Rosie’s Florist,
Prattville.
