Wooden Toys
Harold
Moore first worked with wood as a young boy, but chose the mechanic trade for
his career. After many years working with mechanic’s tools, Harold
decided to try wood working again. He found that the hands-on techniques of
mechanical work were very similar to wood working and that with the proper tools
and much trial and error he could teach himself to create small pieces of
furniture, his first being a baby’s cradle.
Harold’s
family members began requesting more of his furniture pieces and suggested he
try making toys for the children in the family. Harold loves to work with his
hands and keep himself busy. The toys he makes provide him with a satisfying
outlet for his energies. Harold uses soft pine for his toys, painting some with
non-toxic, child resistant paint and leaving others natural, waiting for a child’s
artistic hand.
Harold also uses his wood working skills to create quilting templates
for his wife, Jean. These templates are made out of Plexiglas and Jean’s
designs are cut out with a router.
