Wood Craft
Larry
has one of the most interesting signatures of our Black Belt Artists, and it
was chosen to represent his limited vision. Larry prints the number 1 and an
eye on each of his pieces. He says that one of the most rewarding and
enjoyable aspects of his craft is being able to follow the lines of the
different patterns he uses, and modifying the techniques to meet his limited
visual needs.
In
the past, Larry has worked with stained glass, crocheting, slip cast ceramics,
counted cross-stitch and country carving. He thought he might be capable
of completing some projects he had seen in woodworking magazines, so he
purchased an inexpensive scroll saw. Self-taught from reading and watching
videos, he said he had no formal training in woodworking. Although he says he
has only been working on the saw for about two years, he can usually finish a
three to ten piece puzzle in one evening.
Larry makes a wide variety of wooden puzzles ranging from domesticated
and wild animals to fish, birds, flora and fauna. Some of the finishes on his
puzzles are stained while others are painted. They can be used as play
items, or display pieces.
