Chilton
and Wilcox Counties
Pottery, Wood Crafts, Metal
Butterflies
This unique married
couple took their inspiration for their pottery while watching Mary’s father,
potter Norman Smith. Although mostly self-taught, they began working on their
craft part-time in 1983 but retirement now allows them to work full time. They
create metal butterflies and objects made of wood, but they prefer making
pottery from start to finish.
Cecil and
Mary love to create items that people enjoy. Their mugs, pitchers and bowls are
utilitarian pieces that should be used every day in the kitchen for food
preparation and in setting the table for a meal. Their metal butterflies can be
used in the home or in the garden, and their bird baths or bird feeders are a
welcome sight to our feathered friends.
Currently, the Black Belt Treasures
Gallery is the only venue for showing their work, but they say the work is
available at their home as well.
