Wilcox County
Lariat Rope
Baskets and Vases
Renee’s
decorative creations are one of a kind for Black Belt Treasure’s as no one else
has exhibited items made from recycled ropes that her daughter used in practice
pens in Wilcox County. Prior to becoming
decorative items, they were used during high school rodeos, national roping
competitions and Little Boots Rodeos.
After
Renee saw similar items at a rodeo, she did her own research and began
collecting ropes from her “daughter’s rodeo friends, coaches and roping
boys”. “The ropes are no good after they are used a lot…I wanted to make
something out of them” she said. The lariat ropes are coiled and glued
into a variety of sizes and shapes that become decorative baskets, bowls
and vases.
Although
she has no special arts and craft training and she learned through research,
Renee said she has just started working with the ropes and finds that “taking
something used up and giving it new life” is the most rewarding aspect of this
part of her life.
