Robert Baynes was privileged to have an eighth grade teacher who took an interest in his art skills. She took Robert and two other students to Alabama State University for a career day and this experience motivated Robert to go to ASU and receive his college degree in Art Education. He has taught private lessons in painting and drawing and served as the Artist in Residence at Selma University. He is now a part-time art teacher at Concordia College.

Robert’s love is his art. He feels that he has a responsibility to continually create his art and that it would be selfish of him not to paint. Robert intends for his art to convey serious feeling and meaning in a mostly humorous way. He paints his feelings about what he observes. A single event in current affairs can trigger the emotions he needs to paint. Robert creates in his small in-home studio where he prefers quick drying acrylics in polychromatic color schemes.

Robert’s art is also available at Southern Hub, Old Depot Museum, and the Voting Rights Museum in Selma.
