One look is all it
takes to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of Frankie Dailey’s work. An
interest in art and the desire to work with her hands led Frankie to the medium
of clay almost ten years ago. She was a self-taught artist who had no special
training, but one would never know that she hadn’t studied extensively.
Her beautiful angels
and majestic crosses are created from two types of white clay: Alabama and
Kentucky. These creations took time to complete, but that depended on the size
and details of each piece. Some of her angels and crosses were fired in a kiln,
giving them a shiny, glazed look. Others were unfired, which is known as bisque
pottery, and have a more natural, matte finish. These bisque pieces are
extremely delicate and fragile. “Seeing that others appreciate the work that I
do,” Frankie said, “is the most rewarding aspect of creating art.”
Sadly, Miss Frankie
passed away recently, but her work lives on through several of her family
members who learned the craft right alongside of her.
Presently,
her creations are only found at Black Belt Treasures.
