Joyce Huizinga was taught basic weaving and knitting by her mother
and grandmother. She continued her training with coursework at colleges and
universities, completing a BS degree in Apparel and Textile Design from the
University of Alabama, New College. While she works on a master’s degree in
textiles, Joyce operates a design company that creates garments that
incorporate specialty materials and design elements. She has won many
awards and honors for her unique creations and teaches classes in specialty
sewing techniques to adults and children in America and abroad.
Joyce’s purpose in her designs is to present textiles in a unique
and visually stimulating approach. She sees a final product in the raw
materials she collects, creating designs around the materials. Joyce hand dyes
and makes some of her yarns and weaves many of the fabrics that she sews with.
She purchases materials worldwide and is always experimenting with new ways of
manipulating fabric and yarn.
