Weaving

Nancy-Cassandra Lea was introduced to weaving by New York fiber artist, Carla Giuffrida. She then studied Woven Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology under Nell Znamierowski and Desirée Koslin – both award winning textile artists, authors, and educators. She has worked in the industry, weaving tapestries designed by Michelle Lester, and on textile conservation with New York fine arts conservator, Judith Eisenberg.

Nancy finds weaving very gratifying and comforting.  She satisfies her creative needs with weaving, but is pragmatic enough to realize that she must create designs that are popular.  Nancy uses mostly natural fibers (silk, tensel, and wool). Her color pallet varies according to the seasons and what is fashionably in vogue. Although she has several looms, her primary one is a Macomber.

She has a workshop in Alabama, Selma Handwovens, and has been in love with taqueté (a complex weaving style) since she first saw one of Master Weaver Lillian Whipple’s cards! This was followed by a workshop with Lillian in Texas and it will be quite a while before she gets “over it!” So many little pictures-so little time!
