Black Belt Treasures is extraordinary in the fact that we are one of the only places that you can purchase quilts from Gee’s Bend. These unique quilts are created by a group of women who live in the isolated African American rural community of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. Making quilts is a tradition in this area that goes back to the 19th century where they would take pieces of cloth and sew them together to make bedcovers. Since then the technique has been passed down developing a unique style and quality that is like none other.
Black Belt Treasures has several featured artists that create these quilts using different techniques. One is Deborah Carter who creates her quilts by taking custom textiles and sewing them together by hand. Additionally the custom textiles that she used are created by her. Each quilt follows a distinguished color scheme and could not be replicated. Another artist is Leslie Zikini who makes her quilts in the opposite way by using a machine. She takes textiles created by a machine and puts them together with a machine. However her quilts are just as unique as they still represent the culture and style of Gee’s Bend. Dorothy Woods, another Black Belt Treasures featured artist, uses a mix of these two techniques. Her quilts have pieces of cloth made by a machine then are sewn together by hand.
