Black Belt Treasures holds some of the most unique sculptures and art shaped from wood and are created by artists from the black belt region of Alabama. Each artist has their own specific style that they incorporate in each piece they create. However, they rarely make a piece that is the same as another. Some of these artists have been creating these pieces for years and some even have received their styles from family members that created sculptures and art before them. There are two techniques that are used frequently by these artists and woodworking artists elsewhere.
One technique used frequently is the process of taking strips of wood and gluing it together to create something. The wood that they use is unique to the black belt region and comes in different shapes and sizes. The artists pick through these options to put together a piece of art that represents something about the culture which distinguishes the pieces at Black Belt Treasures from anywhere else. Bud Rogers and Bill Scott are artists that use this technique and sell their artwork through our online store.
Another technique used frequently is the process of taking a block of wood and shaping it. Again the material is unique to the black belt region and comes in different sizes and shapes. However with this technique the artist shapes only one piece of wood using carving techniques. John Sheffey is one of Black Belt Treasures most popular artists and uses this technique. His wood carved ducks are one of the most unique products that we offer. The ducks are carved to simulate feathers by creating ridges and a texture in the shape of a duck. He finishes his ducks with very intricate painting that creates a realistic duck. Each duck Sheffey creates is unique and created by hand. Another Black Belt Treasures artist to check out that uses this technique is Jerry Davidson.
