As a youth, Joseph loved to sketch things that he saw in nature, and only later in life took up painting. His love of the outdoors is reflected in his landscapes, seascapes, and wildlife, as he experienced them in coastal Alabama.
Working outdoors - first as a Horticulturist, then as a Landscape Engineer at Bellingrath Gardens, and additionally as a charter boat captain - aided Joseph in his knowledge of flora and fauna. His attention to detail, specifically natural lighting, is evident in his paintings.
While Joseph is mostly self-taught, Vardiman Chambliss, an artist friend and neighbor, became his mentor and encouraged him to draw, paint, and develop his artistic skills. He stopped painting for a number of years but has recently returned to creating and exhibiting his art.
Joseph has exhibited his award winning paintings in numerous exhibitions, including: Alabama Wildlife Federation 2013- 2014; Energen Art Competition 2011 - 2014; Maritime Art Show 2012; Colors of the Coast 2010-2012; Mobile Arts Council (one-man show) 2012, Mobile Art Association Art Show for 3 years; Black Belt Treasures Cultural Arts Center 2011-2015; Wilcox ArtWorks’ Annual Juried Art Show 2012-15; and others.
