Larry said he had no special artistic training, but his “mother always said I would make a good artist.” His ideas come from photographs that he has taken and uses oil paints on panels, canvas and linen. He makes his frames from barn wood.
Where, when and how he creates is quite unique. Larry has “a cabin in the country where I paint on the stove because it has a light over an easel I made to fit the top of the stove and a fan if the fumes get too strong.” He started painting daily when he turned 65 years of age.
Larry Stewart stated “I always wanted to paint, however I had to make a living. After retirement I started to paint”. Working in his wood shop, Larry cuts and treats Luan panels with modeling paste and Kilz paint.
“Living in the Black Belt has influenced my art by providing a pleasant memory of the way people lived in the past during my childhood…remembering the country stores, the now old cars and trucks they drove, the clothes they wore and the ethics the people lived with.”
He also stated that he is rewarded when “people smile or laugh when viewing my art”.
