Rita Williams
Montgomery County
Painter/Mixed Media
Rita told her story like this: “I got started in this art back in 2014 or 2015. I’d lost my brother and had not been successful in medical school so I was in a really dark place. Soon after, her mother and best friend died within a month of each other. Art helped me heal and has become a full blown passion and obsession.” She added “I have ZERO training. Perhaps that is why some of my art is crazy looking.”
While growing up in Tuskegee, Alabama, Rita’s parents taught her native American and African American history. She said that the “townspeople, although many were impoverished, were proud and hard working. History surrounded me and was a constant in my life – especially with Tuskegee University right there in the city.”
Rita returned home after college and later reflected that her father purposely moved the family to Tuskegee to “avoid the pain his generation suffered due to the segregation that he’d experienced growing up in Memphis, Tennessee.
