Sheila
Lammie Mitchell was born and raised on the island of Jamaica.Always
a lover of art, she wanted to become a “starving artist” but followed her
practical parents’ rules and led a life of order as a teacher. While a college
student, Sheila saw her first glimpse of Selma
while watching the civil rights turmoil of the 1960s. She was instantly
fascinated by the city and after her retirement many years later, she moved
south. The gentility of the South reminds Sheila of her early years in Jamaica and
this familiarity fostered her desire to be as freely creative as a child.
Sheila’s travels in Africa and North America
inspired her to paint landscapes that were free-flowing and peaceful. The large
expanses of sky and grass that she experienced influence her brush strokes and
designs. Her color selections are moving toward the blues and greens of the open
sky and the sense of space she feels as she becomes lighter in her emotions and
moods. As Sheila grows older, she has dropped the fetters of a restrictive life
and is expressing her new found freedom in her art.
Sheila’s work can also be found on the walls of favored
friends and dignitaries.
