Black Belt Treasures is proud to have a wide selection of
baskets that we offer for sale. Because
we offer a varied selection of baskets, we also have a wide range of artists
who contribute to our store. This makes
each basket unique to each artist. Each basket
is created using a different technique and different material, including: white
oak weaving, reed weaving, chair caning, and pine needle basket weaving.
One of the hardest types of basket to find is the white oak
basket, because of its quite difficult to find the white oak wood needed to
create the basket. When harvesting the
white oak tree, the basket weaver has to make sure the tree is at just the right
point of growth and is mature enough to be used. One of the more prominent white oak basket weaving
families in our store is the Sterling Johnson family. Another popular type of basket weaving is the
reed weaving technique, used by Betty Bain and Jennifer Philen . Most of the time reed
weavers have to order their own reed to create their beautiful baskets. Two other types of basket weaving that Black
Belt Treasures has is the process of chair caning, used by Joyce Huizinga and Jennifer Philen, and pine needle basket weaving, used by Maxine
Hopkins.
