Dawn Stephens-Wood is an artist known for her intricate crochet work using 100% acrylic yarn, vintage-inspired lace, twine, and fabrics. Her materials are typically sourced from fabric stores, with completion times varying from an hour for ornaments to several days for purses and up to a week or more for blankets. Dawn’s creativity is deeply influenced by her mother, with whom she collaborates to design unique patterns, while additional ideas often come from suggestions or Southern magazines.
Her creative process is relaxed and flexible, usually taking place in her living room, though she has been known to crochet while traveling, at the beach, or in her backyard swing. Dawn’s artistic journey began at a young age when her mother taught her hand embroidery and later crochet. This early exposure sparked a lifelong passion, bringing her joy and fulfillment.
Dawn’s family has a rich artistic legacy—her mother, a home economics teacher for over 20 years, and her grandmothers, skilled in sewing, crochet, and quilting, inspired her to carry on the tradition. She finds great reward in transforming raw materials into heirlooms cherished by her family and others.
Living in the Black Belt, Dawn views art as a way of life, passing this legacy to her children, especially her oldest bonus daughter, who has recently started needlework. Dawn showcases her work at the Grove Hill Art Center and on her Facebook page. She graduated with honors from the University of Alabama with a degree in Art and Literature, receiving the "Outstanding Senior Project Award" for her work on Art Therapy in Special Education. Dawn shares her passion by teaching various art lessons, continuing to inspire and impact those around her.
