Monroe County
Mixed Media Artist
Located in Lower Alabama, Joan Barfield is committed to creating authentic art using mixed media with acrylic, water, and gouache paints along with collage, inks, and a variety of tools. Her use of bright colors and textures comes from a desire to replicate and share her vision of mother nature. Joan's underlying perspective is that without the beauty of nature, life would not be worth living. "Mother nature is the greatest power and gift given to humans. The colors and light of the natural word are vivid and striking and bring out an intuitive power to recreate them."
Born in New Mexico and later spending twelve formative years in Cocoa Beach, Florida, Joan was raised with traditional values, but by the late 1960s, she embraced a free-spirited path, driven by a desire for adventure and creative inspiration. Her move to Alabama, the authentic "Deep South", sparked Joan's imagination and creativity.
Exploration of forests, rivers, roads, culture and history has translated her inspiration into various creative avenues: homesteading, gardening, sewing, writing, cooking, drawing, painting and photography.
Joan's art can be viewed at Black Belt Treasures in Camden, Alabama. In 2025, Joan was awarded the People's Choice Award at the Wilcox ArtWorks Annual Juried Show in Camden, Alabama and featured in the 2025 Juried Show at Kentuck Art Center in Northport, AL.
