Montgomery County, Alabama
Sue Mims is a lifelong resident of rural South Montgomery County, who grew up on a farm in LaPine, Alabama, alongside her five sisters, grandparents and numerous relatives who settled here in the early 1800's. Farming, hunting and fishing was a way of life. She enjoyed quail, squirrel and rabbit hunting with her father and later deer hunting with her husband. A lover of the outdoors, her art reflects those things that are familiar to her, such as wildlife, hay fields, and sprawling landscapes.
Sue always enjoyed art, but art classes were not available in the small country school she attended.
As an adult the demands of working and parenthood left little time to pursue a hobby. After retirement, Sue bought canvas and paint and decided to just paint for fun. Friends and family encouraged her to continue and insisted she had talent. A year later, her husband, Johnny, who is a wood craftsman himself, built her an art cabin/studio as a Christmas present.
"It's the sweetest thing he could have done for me. I spend many hours painting, and all my cares drift away with each brush stroke.", she says. I see so much beauty in natural surroundings, old buildings, wildlife and God's creation. It reminds me of simpler times when I was younger. I love painting, and the value others see in my work is very rewarding. I hope (after I am gone) someone remembers me one day with fondness when they look at my paintings."
