Folk Art
Tammy Troha is a folk artist from Dallas County, Alabama, who discovered her passion for painting after retiring from a 20-year career as a sales executive in 2024. Raised in Selma, Alabama, Tammy had little artistic experience beyond drawing simple stick figures. However, with curiosity, determination, and guidance from Google and her friend Laura McDowell, she began teaching herself how to paint.
Laura’s honest and constructive feedback helped Tammy grow as an artist, encouraging her to refine her work even when she thought a piece was finished. As her skills developed and she began selling her artwork, Tammy’s creative interests naturally evolved toward mixed media and oil painting.
Her work is now characterized by vibrant colors, expressive textures, and a joyful, intuitive style that led her to embrace folk art as her primary genre. Tammy often incorporates sheetrock mud into her pieces to create rich texture and depth, adding a tactile dimension that makes each work distinctive.
Through her bright, textured folk art, Tammy expresses both her creativity and her connection to the world around her. For her, art is more than a finished painting, art is a reflection of her soul, her journey, and her evolving artistic identity.
