Montgomery County
Watercolor Artist
Betsy Prince is a watercolor artist based in Montgomery, Alabama, where she has lived for more than four decades. Working under the name Blessings by Betsy, she creates watercolor paintings inspired by faith, family and the quiet beauty found in everyday life across Alabama. Each original piece includes a favorite scripture citation on the back, reflecting her desire that her work bring peace, comfort, and encouragement to others.
Although Betsy always loved art, painting, and writing, she began painting in earnest after retiring in 2020. A Christmas gift of watercolor supplies from her husband sparked what has become a deeply meaningful creative journey. She begins each piece with a pencil sketch and then builds the image in watercolor, allowing each painting to develop in its own time. Largely self-taught, she has taken a few watercolor classes but has no formal art training.
Betsy holds a master’s degree in Special Education from the University of Alabama and devoted more than 25 years of her career to serving children with disabilities and their families, retiring as Director of Alabama’s Early Intervention System. Her lifelong advocacy and artistic perspective were deeply shaped by her personal life, particularly by her son Ryan, who was born with significant intellectual and multiple disabilities. Ryan taught her to find beauty in unexpected places and to cherish simple, life-giving moments, themes that continue to guide her artwork.
The hummingbird featured in her logo appears on every painting and symbolizes faith, remembrance, and hope. The image was inspired by a hummingbird that appeared in her window on the day Ryan went to heaven, reminding her of God’s intricate and amazing creations, His unlimited strength and the importance of resting in His quiet confidence. Betsy prays that each painting will evoke cherished memories of special people, places or moments that continue to bring joy each time the artwork is viewed.
