Black Belt Treasures Cultural Arts Center is proud to have several Black Belt artists included on the Alabama Black Belt Adventures' Makers Trail. The Makers Trail invites you to experience Alabama’s Black Belt through the artists, craftspeople, cooks, and storytellers who bring its traditions to life. Each stop offers an intimate, hands-on encounter—from quilting, natural dyeing, and found-object sculpture to Southern cooking and other heritage crafts—led by makers deeply connected to the region. Visitors can tour working studios, hear the stories behind each practice, learn time-honored techniques, and create something of their own to take home. Designed for small groups and meaningful interaction, many experiences are also available as private bookings for families, friends, and organized groups. At Black Belt Treasures Cultural Arts Center, we are proud to offer the following experiences.

Kristin Law: Black Belt Impressions in Printmaking

In Camden, Alabama, artist Kristin Law, known for her work through Possum Pottery & Art, invites visitors to explore the landscapes, wildlife, history, and cultural traditions of the Black Belt through the art of etching and printmaking.

The experience begins with an introduction to the region itself. Through images and conversation, Law explores the natural resources, historic architecture, cultural symbols, and everyday details that distinguish Alabama's Black Belt. From native wildlife and wildflowers to agricultural landscapes and regional foodways, these visual references become the starting point for each participant's original artwork.

Working alongside Law, visitors learn the fundamentals of traditional etching and printmaking, creating original images inspired by the region's natural and cultural landscape. Using etching tools and acrylic plates, participants develop their designs before applying ink and transferring their images onto paper. The process offers an opportunity to explore composition, texture, and mark-making while discovering how familiar elements of the Black Belt can become compelling works of art.

For those seeking a deeper creative experience, Law offers private workshops centered on larger, more detailed works. Participants create original 8-by-10-inch etchings, producing prints in black-and-white and sepia inks on fine watercolor paper. An extended two-day experience introduces traditional hand-tinting techniques, allowing guests to add delicate washes of transparent color to their finished prints.

What distinguishes Law's approach is the connection between the artistic process and the place that inspires it. The Black Belt becomes more than the setting for the workshop. Its plants, animals, buildings, and cultural traditions provide a visual language through which visitors can create their own interpretations of the region.

The experience offers a personal encounter with Alabama's creative landscape, resulting in an original work of art that carries the memory of the Black Belt long after the visit ends.

This Class is typically offered at BBTCAC in Camden, but may also be held off-site at your business, community center, school, or other locations (for an additional fee). Please contact Kristin at 334-682-9878 for details about booking an "off-site" experience.
