Johnny Mims is a retired Forest Ranger/Wildland Firefighter who resides in LaPine, Alabama in Southern Montgomery County. He has always enjoyed working with wood, especially seeing what can be done with the natural resources that surround us. Many of his projects feature wood from trees he has cut down, had milled and planed himself. He enjoys seeing the unique grains emerge as he works the wood. His pieces are one-of-a-kind creations that will last a lifetime. He has made many tables, benches, keepsake boxes, and the like, for his family members as well as game boards. He made a solid black walnut dining table utilizing the natural curve of the tree trunk which occupies a place of honor in his dining room today.
His skill was developed over the years, through trial and error, but his wife demands it's genetic as his grandfather and many of his uncles were carpenters by trade. His creativity is evident in many of the pieces he makes. Most are utilitarian and come from a personal need, such as the hat rack. His wife was not pleased with the placement on top of the chest of drawers and wanted a particular place for it to reside when not in use.
