Dallas County
Potter
“When I was a small child, my grandmother would take me to a dam that had clay in it. We would dry the clay and make pinch pots…I have a very talented brother…I am currently learning from Becky Blaylock. I am now 63 years old and just now fulfilling my dream of becoming a potter.”
Mary Jane said she loves to hand build clay but is learning to throw on a wheel. Her inspiration to create came from her grandmother, and ideas for her pottery are either her own or from seeing things that inspire her.
Besides being new to pottery, she sews and makes live wreaths to sell at Christmas.
Mary Jane feels that living in the Black Belt is inspirational because there are so many artists in the region. She said that creating, and the rewards and enjoyment she receives is because “God has blessed us all with talents! It just gives me great joy!
