Wilcox County
Fiber Artist
Like so many
children during summer vacation, Connie spent time with her grandparents
working in their garden. She tells of sitting on the front porch swing and
telling her Grandmother that she was bored. Out from the house came the
brightest blue yarn she had ever seen.” You take the thread like this and make
a chain stitch” her Grandmother said. Then she tore up the sample and said “You
try” and three hours later Connie made her first chain.
Since Connie is left handed,
she struggled to learn on her own as she had no access to instruction books or
teachers that could help her. She has been using a variety of fibers and other
material for over thirty years: such as yarn, twine, ribbon, plastic bags,
fabric, thread, buttons, metal clips and needles. Her projects can take from
thirty minutes to three months to complete.” If it is detailed,” she said, “it
could take a year.”
Connie’s
work varies in material from traditional knitted or crocheted kitchen
accessories, children’s clothing, purses and beach bags made from knitted
plastic bags. In addition to these items she makes candy, draws, paints with
watercolors, does calligraphy, makes candles, works with origami papers, and is
a published poet.

work can also been found on Facebook at Connie’s Creations.
