“I always wanted to paint – started trying around 2000 – burned everything for ten years!” Charlie Friday doesn’t consider himself to be an artist - but when he is alone in his studio – his ‘artist ego’, Z Z Blue, says that HE is an artist and HE is inspired.

Living in the Black Belt is cause for inspiration for Z Z Blue because of the history of the South and his “love of country things”. His materials include furniture store and lumber store discards, cardboard, plywood and paint. His paintings are reminiscent of the works of Jackson Pollack in style and paint application, but Z Z alleges he is unfamiliar with his work and just creates from the passion in his soul. He “enjoys watching others as they view my work” as that is almost as rewarding and enjoyable as creating the art.

Z Z Blue, aka Charley Friday, received accolades from the 2013 Arts Revive Juried Art Show by winning First Place Award for one of his vibrant and spirited paintings.

Z Z Blue has work on display at Walter Reed Hospital as well as the BBTCAC Gallery.
