Staff Spotlight: Meet Rana M Luce

Hey there, I'm Rana, and I'm proud to be a Senior Aide at Black Belt Treasures Cultural Arts Center (BBTCAC). My role here is quite special – I'm one of the first faces our guests see as they walk in. Connecting with people, building rapport, and immersing myself in the world of art and creativity is what makes my job truly enjoyable.

One of the best parts of my job is the people I work with. My coworkers are like a second family to me, making each day a joyous experience. And speaking of joy, being surrounded by captivating art is invigorating. I can't help but marvel at the artists' creativity and the diverse pieces that grace our gallery.

Allow me to share a glimpse of my favorite artists. Kristin Law holds a special place in my heart – watching her journey from a little girl to a remarkable artist and mother has been awe-inspiring. Sam Williams, on the other hand, is a masterful potter. His fish-patterned platters and bowls are my personal favorites. Then there's Jessie Lavon, whose primitive yet impactful paintings resonate deeply with me. Her painting "And the Angels Carried Mama Home" struck a chord within, reminding me of the angels who guided my own mother home to heaven.

Working here is a dream; there are no hard parts. Everyone is kind and gracious, creating a harmonious environment that nurtures creativity and collaboration.

Away from work, I cherish my role as a mother to two wonderful children and the owner of two charming cats, Marcella and Henry Newton. They're named after my beloved grandchildren, who hold a special place in my heart. While I'm not an artist at BBTCAC, I express my creativity through home décor, adorning my living space with nature's treasures – feathers, scales, animal nails, bones, and more.

When I'm not caring for my pets, I spend time with friends and visit my children whenever possible. If I had a dream pet, it would be one that reciprocates my love unconditionally. As for superpowers, I'd choose the ability to truly connect with people, fostering understanding and empathy.

BBTCAC is a haven for creativity. The gallery showcases an array of art styles that inspire and intrigue visitors from around the globe. The staff's passion and viewpoints add a unique dimension to the experience. I find immense joy in welcoming artists who share their creative processes and contribute to our dynamic environment.

My time here has been an educational journey. I've learned about various art forms, the sources of inspiration, and the profound dedication artists invest in their work. Witnessing the happiness art brings to people's lives is a rewarding experience that fuels my own passion for the arts.

As for the future, I hope BBTCAC will offer art classes centered around my personal interest – the beauty of nature's oddities. Imagine participants embarking on nature walks, discovering hidden treasures, and then returning to create unique art pieces inspired by their finds. The possibilities are as limitless as the imagination.

BBTCAC's impact on our community is growing, thanks to engaging events like Hog Wild for Art, Christmas in Camden, and both adult and children's art classes. The organization's continuous efforts to discover and showcase new artists will undoubtedly keep enriching lives through art.

Join me in this artistic journey, where each day brings surprises, inspiration, and a chance to make the world a little more beautiful.

We asked the current staff of Black Belt Treasures Cultural Arts Center a number of questions and compiled their answers into a short bio so you can get to know them.
