Dusk on The River is a16"x20" painting, framed in gold to provide impact, is an expressionistic landscape characterized by impasto brushwork and vibrant saturated colors of acrylic and a crackle paint medium. Joan Barfield has spent many happy days on the Alabama River and wanted to capture a mood of dusk on the river. Known for her impasto paintings, she wanted to provide a tactile quality to the painting by using heavy acrylic application on top of the cracked surface provided by crackle paint. The foreground's dark abstract shapes of green and black against an orange-red ground represent the shoreline of the river of turquoise and blue. The dense band of various greens above the river depicts a distant tree-line and hills, highlighted by a bright orange-red sky. The placement of blues and greens of the water and land against the warm intense orange shoreline and sky create a visual impact.
