Folk Victorian is a framed 16"x20" on stretched linen canvas. The artist, Joan Barfield is fascinated by older homes of the south and wanted to capture a representation of a folk victorian home ( early 1900's0 in decay. The central focus of this painting is the front view of one and half story house with a prominent gable roof structure. Using a monochromatic chalk palette of black, white and grey, Joan wanted to create a mood of decay and loss while highlighting some of the imperfect features a hundred year old house would have. Titanium white acrylic was used on parts of the lap siding, while gray chalk was used to indicate a need for a paint job. The roofline was painted a bright rust color to further emphasize the disrepair and possible loss of this once grand home.
