Intuitively, Joan Barfield created this painting during the Los Angeles fires of the winter of 2025. It began with an exploration of color, texture, and emotion. This abstract expressionist painting suggests a fiery landscape of trees with yellow and green elements and darker, fiery reds and oranges. The upper half of the painting suggests a canopy of trees, which contrasts with darker richer red and brown tones suggesting burnt trees on the forest floor. Using mostly a pallet knife, the thick impasto applications of acrylic paint and mica flakes created raised areas and surface imperfections that add character and a three dimensional impression to the piece. This framed16"x20" painting makes the viewer want to reach out and feel its texture. The artwork is dominated by the complementary shades of green and red against black which brings a warm, dramatic and energetic feel to the painting. The small touches of turquoise scattered throughout the painting provides a sharp contrast to the warm tones which allow the viewer's eye to move across the painting.
