The Artist Joan Barfield's interest in portraying old southern buildings led her to create this simple painting in the style of southern folk art. The coffin shop built in Gainesville, Alabama around 1860 was the inspiration for this painting. It was a showroom built by Mr. Edward King, and was the place to pick out material and wood for your coffin. This painting was created with grey, black and white chalk, and accents of acrylic color. Bold colors representing foliage and sky form a contrast to the white house. The brushstroke and chalk marks give the house a textured expressive quality. This painting's composition was made for the purpose of illustrating historical interest in the Black Belt Region of Alabama. The Coffin Shop painting is framed and measures 11"x14".
